With Microsoft set to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, it’s time for businesses to consider their options. While your computer won’t suddenly stop working, it will no longer receive critical security patches, updates, or technical support, leaving you responsible for keeping it secure. If you tried upgrading to Windows 11 but failed the compatibility check, don’t worry – there are still options to consider.

**Here are five solutions if your PC doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements:**

1. **Ignore the Deadline**

While this is technically an option, we don’t recommend it. Once support for Windows 10 ends, your device won’t receive essential security updates, leaving it vulnerable to cyberthreats. Additionally, you’ll lose access to technical support and non-security updates that keep your device running efficiently. Ignoring the end-of-support deadline could expose your business to unnecessary risks and reduced system performance.
2. **Switch from Windows to Linux**

If you’re tech-savvy and aren’t ready to invest in new hardware, consider switching to a Linux-based operating system. Linux offers a free, open-source alternative to Windows with robust security features. However, it comes with a learning curve and may have compatibility issues with certain applications, so only choose this option if you’re comfortable managing the transition.
3. **Use a Technical Workaround to Upgrade to Windows 11**

For those willing to take a risk, you may still be able to install Windows 11 on an “incompatible” device by making certain registry modifications. By following guides like those from ZDNET, you can bypass the compatibility check, but be aware that you’ll receive a warning: “Your PC will no longer be supported and may not receive updates.” This approach isn’t officially supported by Microsoft, and any potential issues will be your responsibility to handle.
4. **Purchase Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESUs)**

Microsoft recently announced that it will offer Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 users as a subscription-based service, providing up to three more years of security patches. For businesses, the ESU cost starts at $61 for the first year, doubles to $122 for the second, and goes up to $244 for the third. Educators receive a steep discount, with prices starting at just $1 for the first year. Keep in mind, however, that these ESUs don’t include technical support, and you must buy each year in succession.
5. **Invest in a New, Windows 11-Compatible PC**

If your current device is aging, purchasing a new Windows 11-compatible computer is often the best choice. Modern PCs are generally faster, more secure, and offer better productivity features. Before making the switch, be sure to back up all your data to avoid any loss. With a new device, you’ll be set for several years of worry-free support and improved performance.

**Start Planning Now**

Don’t wait until the last minute to decide on your next steps. October 2025 will come quickly, and having a plan in place now can prevent stress and avoid rushed decisions later. If you’re uncertain about your best option, our team is here to help. We’ll work with you to find a solution that fits your needs, ensuring a smooth transition to Windows 11 or another option that keeps your business up and running.
